Perched on the hillside with ocean below and rainforest as a backdrop, Castara Retreats offers one and two bedroom villas in Tobago which invite you to experience ‘living in the landscape’ in our unique treehouse-style accommodations located on the edge of the friendly Caribbean village of Castara.
Our eco hideaways capture the exotic essence of the Caribbean, offering a balance between the services of a hotel, and the independence of self-catering. In our one and bedroom villas in Tobago, you will find luxurious bedrooms, expansive decks with spectacular ocean views, and comfortable furniture in which to relax and unwind.
Our local team, led by Porridge and Jeanell will to their best to ensure you enjoy your stay. They are local to Castara and are repositories of local knowledge, and will be there to assist in planning trips and activities during your stay. The village of Castara is just a few minutes’ walk away, and here you can experience local Tobagonian culture.
Daily walks up and down the hill, swims in the sea, and diets full of fresh fruits, vegetables and fish all help our guests feel nourished and nurtured. For anyone needing a little extra help relaxing, our wellness practitioners are here to assist. Enjoy an invigorating Kundalini yoga class overlooking the ocean, or relax with a deep tissue massage.
Castara’s beach is just a short walk away, and offers golden sands, safe and sheltered swimming, and fantastic snorkelling among the coral reef. Little beach bars offer the perfect spot for enjoying a local beer whilst watching the fishing boats bobbing back into the bay each evening, and daily light show as the sun sets below the ocean.
As you stroll around the garden, enjoy the landscape of grassy banks, fragrant shrubs and exotic flowers. This forms the immediate environment for our accommodations and is a feast for the eyes and a haven for wildlife. Hummingbirds appear every few minutes; Mot Mots, Blue Tanagers and Bananaquits visit the feeders and Parrotlets squawk by in flocks.
The views are amazing. Stayed at Birdsong with friends who enjoyed walking down to the beach, buying a 10lb king fish and returning to the apartment to have freshly caught fish for dinner. Imagine falling asleep to the sound of the waves, or waking next morning to the sound of birds chirping or watching the boats bobbing in the water. The view of the bay from your window is to die for and the apartment was exceptionally clean. The only drawback is that you would wish you spent more time there no matter how long you stay.
If you are looking for a taste of the "real" Caribbean then this is definitely the place to find it. Castara Retreats is situated on the hillside overlooking the small village of Castara. From our perch in the trees we could watch the boats going out to fish, the ladies baking the bread in the clay oven twice a week and spot when the fish was being sold in the market. We hired a car for two days, which enabled us to see a bit more of Tobago, but nowhere else that we visited had the kind of lively but laid-back ambience we found in Castara.

Take your pick of Caribbean, Cajun and Creole dishes, including our ‘fish of the day’ such as red snapper, barracuda, and kingfish, griddled prawns in coconut and lime dressing, and the spicy flavours of our jerk chicken, served either “criminal” or “gangster” hot!
Each of our one and two bedroom villas are self-catering with well-equipped kitchens and shady spots for al-fresco dining under the stars. In the village, there are also a number of local bars and restaurants where you can sample local delicacies.
